Contenders in September

The Soonerball staff once again had to spend the start of College football season dealing with the hurricane’s of New Orleans. But we did manage to catch both games on the radio; and got to watch some of the Cincinnati game on replay. Hopefully we will make it to Norman to see a few games in person. The rest we should be able to catch on the satellite. We are planning on running the fantasy game, as long as the office doesn’t burn down or a hurricane floods the Big Easy. Anyway to the action

The offense has looked good, scoring more than 50 points a game, while taking it easy. They shut things down in the first game after scoring 50 in the first half against an overmatched Chattanooga. Cincinnati was supposed to have a pretty good defense, including 2 potential all Americans, but they also proved to be no match for the Sooners. Sam Bradford passed for a career best 395 yards and 5 touchdowns, but did throw 2 pics. Freshman wide receiver Ryan Broyles set an Oklahoma Freshman record with 145 yards and looked outstanding. He has hands, good size, and great speed. He looks like the answer the Sooners needed for one final weapon at wide out. Demarco Murray seems healthy, and has a chance to emerge as the top tailback in College Football this year.

The defense played well. Linebacker Ryan Reynolds and defensive end Austin English both seemed to have recovered from their injuries. The once hailed Bob Stoops defense has been one of the weak point of OU teams in recent years. They will need to stay health and improve if the Sooners have a chance of a national title this year.

The kick-off coverage team was as bad as its gets last week. Something that can cost you a title shot if you’re not careful. The Bearcats had one kick-off returned for a TD and 2 more long runs that helped them score their 20 points.

Washington

OU goes on the road to play a BCS conference team this week; but the Huskies are very young team that went 4-9 last year. They have question marks at just about every position. They did play No 18. BYU very close last week; loosing 29-27. Anything can happen when you go on the road in College football to another BCS conference.
